Continuing Education Requirements for Nurse Practitioners
American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certifying Board (AANPCB) dictates that you must complete 100 contact hours of advanced CE in a 5 year period. 25 of these hours must be in advanced practice pharmacotherapeutics.
Pharmacology CE must include topics such as current clinical application of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, techniques for safe drug prescribing information, and drug specific information/therapy for treatment of common acute and chronic diseases across the lifespan.
Pharmacology CE must be separately documented by the sponsor offering the CE, i.e. “Credit: 1.25 CE; 0.5 of which may be applied towards Pharmacology.”
At this time, the Psychiatry & Psychotherapy Podcast credits may be applied towards non-pharmacology CE. While pharmacology topics are addressed, please assume that Psychiatry & Psychotherapy Podcast CE are non-pharmacology. If this changes, we will update you!
CE certificates must show clear accreditation by an appropriate authorizing entity. CE activities must be accredited by or be an approved provider such as, but not limited to, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
The Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Podcast activities are provided through a joint providership with University of California Irvine School of Medicine, which is an ACCME accredited provider.
Certificants are responsible for accessing and maintaining copies of their CE certificates for submission to AANPCB for their recertification application.
We suggest saving all certificates. If however, you lose a certificate, please contact us at dr@psychiatrypodcast.com.

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) dictates that you must complete 75 contact hours (CH) in a 5 year period. All APRNs renewing their CNS or NP certification are required to complete 25 CH of pharmacology, as a portion of the mandatory 75 CH that is related to the CNS or NP certification.
All 75 contact hours (CH) must be directly related to the full scope of your certification role and specialty.
At least 60 of the 75 CH must be formally approved continuing education hours. Formally approved continuing education hours meet one or more of the criteria listed below:
Continuing nursing education (CNE) approved for nursing contact hours by an accredited provider or approver of CNE.
Continuing medical education (CME) approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits ™ (which we are approved for)
Continuing education hours approve through the Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education. Visit www.jointaccreditation.org/accredited-providers?page=8 for a list of accredited providers
Other healthcare disciplines’ CH applicable to your certification specialty (e.g., dietitian, social work, emergency management, EMT, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, physical therapist, occupational therapist, physician assistants) are acceptable.
Repeat courses are not accepted for certification renewal. You may claim credit for a specific course only once, even if you took that course multiple times during the past five years.
The hours achieved from academic coursework that are applicable to your certification specialty can be converted to contact hours. See Category 2 for accepted academic coursework.
As needed, you can use these formulas to convert continuing education credit or academic hours: 1 Contact Hour = 60 Minutes or 1 Academic Semester Credit = 15 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ Contact Hours 60 Minutes = 1 Contact Hour or 1 Academic Quarter Credit = 12.5 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ Contact Hour
At this time, the Psychiatry & Psychotherapy Podcast credits may be applied towards non-pharmacology CE. While pharmacology topics are addressed, please assume that Psychiatry & Psychotherapy Podcast CE are non-pharmacology. If this changes, we will update you!
